People from across the world aspire to live in the city of Dubai. In 2019, the UAE introduced exciting changes to give more people the flexibility to live here.
The UAE implemented a new system for long-term residence visas to allow people to have a more stable status. The improved system will enable foreigners to live, work and study in the UAE without a national sponsor. Traditionally, the sponsor is the place of employment. Such visas are only valid for two to three years.
The new “Golden Visas” are issued for 5 or 10 years and can be renewed without the need of a sponsor. This gives people the freedom to not worry about losing their residence visa status should they leave an employer. This new policy is expected to provide a boost in the property market as residents can establish stronger roots in the UAE.
Five-Year Visas
There are several subcategories of people that can apply for a five-year visa.
- Students – Students with a minimum of 95 percent in secondary school with a 3.75 GPA upon graduation from an institute of higher education are eligible for the five-year visa. They will also be allowed to sponsor their spouse and children (if applicable).
- Entrepreneurs – Entrepreneurs that have a project with a minimum capital of AED 500,000 or those supported by an accredited business incubator in the country are eligible for a five-year visa.
- Property Investors – Investors with a property of a minimum of AED 5,000,000 qualify for the visa. The property must be retained by the owner for three years and be free of any mortgage.
Ten-Year Visas
There are several subcategories of people that can apply for a five-year visa.
- High Net Worth Individuals – Investors in public investments of at least AED 10,000,000. This can be via a deposit in an investment fund in the UAE or creating a company with capital that meets the criteria.
- Highly Talented and Skilled People – Skilled people such as doctors, specialists, scientists, inventors, and renowned people in the field of culture and art can qualify for a ten-year visa. However, such applicants must be vetted by a UAE governmental entity.
