The Umm Al Quwain Department of Economic Development (UAQ DED) issues all local business licenses for areas that are not covered by free zones. Historically, local licenses required local citizens to be majority shareholders. However, the UAE has modernized its laws recently to grant ex-pat owners full ownership of a business in most sectors.
The Emirate of Umm Al Quwain was formed in 1775 when Sheikh Majid Al Mualla established it as an independent sheikhdom. The first poultry farm in the UAE was established in Falaj Al Mualla. It is considered a key supplier of poultry and dairy products to the local market.
Unlike some of its neighbours, Umm Al Quwain has not made any significant oil or gas discoveries in its territory and depends on revenue from hotels, parks, fisheries, and trading activities.
