Emirates of Fujairah

History of Fujairah

Archaeological finds in the Emirate of Fujairah point to a history of human occupation and trading links stretching back at least 4,000 years. The emirate is home to the oldest mosque in use in the United Arab Emirates, Al Badiyah Mosque, built-in 1446.

In 1952 the British government accepted Fujairah as an autonomous state. It swiftly joined the UAE in the 1970s and has modernized ever since. As a result, Fujairah’s economy expanded rapidly throughout the first part of the century, peaking at 21 percent growth in 2006.

World’s Third-largest Bunkering Destination

The Economy of Fujairah

Fujairah could become the UAE’s new growth centre as a hub for oil exports. The Port of Fujairah has deep waters that allow access to ultra-large crude carriers. This has enabled it to become the world’s third-largest bunkering destination for cargo ships to refuel, restock on vital supplies and even wait between jobs without having to pass into the Gulf of Oman.

The 11-billion-dollar UAE rail network and the wider GCC rail network will further enhance Fujairah’s economy. It could also serve as an alternative cargo route and, once the rest of the GCC network is completed, will facilitate the transportation of goods across the region.

Fujairah is the only emirate of the UAE that is almost entirely mountainous. Deserts broadly cover all the other emirates. Fujairah boasts a higher-than-average yearly rainfall than the rest of the UAE, making it a popular destination for tourism in the summer months.
